Virginia Historical Society Library

The Virginia Historical Society maintains materials useful for genealogical research. They have an extensive collection of manuscripts documenting African American history, they also have a collection of Civil War material. They have indexes to all of the Virginia census records from 1810 to 1920. There are some immigration and passenger ship records. There are other materials relating to Wills, Marriages, Births and Deaths, Bibles, Newspapers, Maps, and others.

The Library of Virginia

The Library of Virginia provides an excellent library of genealogy records including: Census Records - current statistical resources and historical records released for public use, County and City Records - includes court records, deeds, marriage records and vital statistics, wills, and other probate records, Land Records - includes county and city deeds, patents and grants, Military Records and Resources - includes service, pension, and land bounty records for Virginia soldiers from the colonial period to the twentieth century, Newspapers and Periodicals - catalogs and indexes, Private Papers and Biographical Resources - contains genealogical and biographical sources including Bible records, cemetery records, church records, family papers, genealogical notes and charts, and organization records, Tax Records - includes county and city tithable lists and state land and personal property tax books, Vital Statistics - includes official state and locality registration of marriages, births, and deaths as well as family Bible and church records.
